Parent & Family Orientation

Parent & Family Orientation (PFO) aims to empower families with the knowledge, tools, and connections needed to support their student’s academic and personal success at CSUDH. Through this program, families will gain insights into university operations, resources, and expectations while fostering a sense of belonging within the Toro community.

Key components of PFO include:

Understand University Basics: Learn how the university operates and where to find key offices/departments. 

Comprehend Academic Advising and Expectations: Learn how academic advising works, including the role of advisors, general registration processes, and how students can stay on track to meet their academic goals. 

Identify Academic and Student Support Resources: Be able to identify and navigate essential resources, such as tutoring centers, mental health services, and accessibility services, to support their student’s well-being. 

Understand Faculty Expectations: Learn what faculty expect from students in terms of classroom participation, academic integrity, and time management to help guide their student’s college journey. 

Support Student Success: Develop strategies for supporting their student’s transition to college life, fostering independence while remaining a source of encouragement and guidance. 

Understand Student Privacy and Financial Aid Processes: Develop an understanding of student privacy rights under FERPA and how they are applied at the university level. Gain clarity on how financial aid works, including how to access and interpret financial aid packages, scholarships, and deadlines. 

Build Community with Fellow Families: Connect with other parents and families, creating a supportive network within the Toro community to share experiences, advice, and encouragement.

Who is PFO for?

PFO is a program designed specifically for parents, family members, and student supporters of incoming first-time, first-year students (freshmen).

Is PFO Required?

We enthusiastically encourage you to attend PFO, however, participation in this program is entirely optional.

When is PFO?

PFO English Session will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025 from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Is there a fee associated with PFO?

There is a non-refundable $30 fee per guest (2 guest maximum). At this time, we only accept Debit or Credit Card. Children aged 12 and under may attend at no cost. The PFO fee includes parking, breakfast, lunch, and a Welcome Bag.

How long is PFO?

PFO will begin at 8:00 a.m. and conclude at 5:00 p.m. Further details will be provided soon.
